Reading is fundamental to classical home education. Even little babies will benefit from reading aloud if you find classic kids’ books with bright colors, high contrast, simple shapes, and LOTS of baby faces! How a Baby Grows by Nola Buck combines baby faces and one-word patterns. Books with finger-plays (like “pat-a-cake” or “this little piggy”) and songs are also great read-alouds for babies. Marc Brown, author of the popular Arthur and D.W. series, has written a finger-play book called Finger Rhymes which illustrates the hand movements for the parent. Finally, nursery rhymes are a must.
