Homeschool toddlers love “touchy-feely” books with texture and flaps like the classic kids’ pop-up book, The Wheels on the Bus, by Paul Zelinsky. Colorful board books that identify common things in the toddler’s life (animals, vehicles, children) are easy for the child to hold and not as easily destroyed by nibbling and rough handling. Wordless picture books like The Snowman by Raymond Briggs are good because you can ask the toddler what’s happening in the story. The rhythm and rhyme of Mother Goose and simple children’s poetry like Sing a Song of Popcorn are especially entertaining to toddlers who are just learning the joy of language. Look for simple plots with a clear beginning, middle, and ending.
